What to do about shoulder pain after padel

Practical information about shoulder pain after padel, including load, recovery, warning signs and a gradual return to play.

Why the shoulder can become sore

Padel includes overhead shots, quick reactions and sharp changes of direction. Shoulder pain can start after more time on court, repeated hard shots, a change in technique or a fall. Several factors may be involved. The place that hurts cannot confirm the cause on its own.

Research on padel injuries is still new. One review found fewer shoulder problems than elbow or knee problems. The shoulder was still one of the more common injury areas.

What to do first

  • Stop or reduce shots that clearly cause pain.
  • Keep the shoulder moving gently within a comfortable range.
  • Do not keep testing it at full force.
  • Note whether pain follows one movement, a fall or a change in playing time.

Book an assessment if the pain lasts, keeps returning or disturbs your sleep. Seek advice before normal play if the shoulder also feels weak.

Returning to the court

Return in stages instead of moving straight from rest to a full match. Start with comfortable movement and controlled practice. Try lighter shots and shorter sessions. Then increase the pace and overhead work if the shoulder remains comfortable.

A short warm-up and a steady rise in weekly playing time may help. Ask a qualified padel coach for advice if one part of your technique keeps causing pain.

When to seek urgent help

Get prompt medical care after a fall if the shoulder looks out of shape. You also need help if you cannot raise the arm. Clear weakness, numbness or severe swelling need prompt care. Shoulder pain with chest pain, trouble breathing or feeling very unwell needs urgent medical attention.
